He called his sister, Holika and asked her to sit in bonfire along with Prahlad, as she had garment that could protect her from getting burned. However the garment got blown away to Prahlad, Holika got burned and Prahlad was not harmed. From this legend the burning of Holika called “Holika Dahan” is celebrated on the first day.

Holi also symbolizes the extreme enchantment that Lord Krishna took in playing Holi with Radha. Another myth associated with Holi when Ogress Pootana tried to kill baby Krishna by breast feeding him poisonous milk, Lord Krishna not only suck milk but her blood too and killed her. Holi was celebrated in Gokul, Lord Krishna’s town on the victory of good over evil.
