Tricks to Clean Different Jewellery Types
By Paliwal Jewelers

Gold jewellery

1. This is the most common trick that you can use for jewellery which is not very old and has little amount of dirt. Add five drops of good quality dishwasher in an empty bowl for heavy weight jewellery piece & two to three drops for light weight jewellery like small rings & earrings. In the bowl, pour warm (not hot) water and shake the water in the bowl well to convert it into foam.

Soak your jewellery for ten to fifteen minutes and then take it out. Use a toothbrush and scrub it well all over. Make sure you don't leave any site. After rubbing wash on your jewellery with warm water, make sure it doesn't slip from your hands as small jewellery piece can get lost if once entered into the sink.

2. In case your gold jewellery has a large amount of stones, use same soapy mixture prepared in a bowl and dip a napkin in it. Always remember that you should never use hot water, it can be dangerous and ruin the stones used in the jewellery. Scrub your jewellery with the napkin with gentle strokes. In case your jewellery is badly tarnished, use club soda instead of dish detergent.

Pearl jewellery

Pearl jewellery is highly delicate; therefore it should be cleaned with ease. Things like cosmetics and eatable are harmful to them; they should be kept away from these two. In case it comes in contact, it should be cleaned immediately using either of the below two methods:

1. If your pearls are new, for the first few cleanings just use a moderately wet cloth to clean them in order to remove the precipitates on it. Always wear your pearl jewellery after getting ready so that pearls are not exposed to perfumes, hairspray and other cosmetics.

2. Make the same soap solution with a few drops of mild liquid soap which do not contain any ammonia or other harsh chemicals. Don't soak the jewellery, but instead use lint free cotton cloth to rub the solution on the jewellery with mild strokes. This will not tear off the natural layers on the pearls and will give it a new look.

If your jewellery has moderate amount or little amount of dirt, it can be cleaned by using just a clean lint-free pure cotton cloth.

 Silver jewellery

1. Take a bowl of warm water and add a spoon of salt to it. Stir it until the salt dissolves, now take another bowl and cover its base with aluminum foil and pour the warm salt water into it. Soak your jewellery in the second bowl for six minutes. After removing it, use cold water to rinse it and dry it with a clean cloth.

2. For very heavy silver tarnishing, make a paste of three parts of baking soda with one part of water. Take a lint-free cloth and rub this paste on silver jewellery. Rinse it thoroughly after cleaning it.

Diamond jewellery

1. Many brands today produce products to clean jewellery; one of the best jewelry cleaner is Alka-Seltzer. Fill a glass with water till it gets half and then drop your ring into it and then add Alka-Seltzer. The water will start fizzing, which will bring back the sparkling shine of your diamonds.

2. You can also dip your ring into a cup of good quality glass cleaner, and leave it overnight and wash it in the morning. This trick also works well in case you don't have Alka-Seltzer available.

3. Ultrasonic Jewellery cleaner: This is a small machine. With its use you can turn your old dull diamond jewellery back to its original position without making your hands dirty. You will be amazed while exploiting it.
